Roads around Winnersh

by Prue Bray on 20 January, 2015

What can you expect to find on the roads locally in the next few months?

1  Showcase roundabout:  the lights will be switched off from today 20th January for 6 weeks while they are upgraded.  The middle of the roundabout will be closed and it will operate like a normal roundabout.   Please have patience with the extra queuing at peak times and please take extra care, especially with respect to pedestrians and cyclists, as there won’t be any lights to help pedestrians cross the road during this period.

2  A new cycleway will be put down Reading Road in Winnersh, with work supposedly taking place before the end of March.  There is still some arguing going on over the removal of the right-turn arrows and traffic islands.  This will be similar to what has just been done to Wokingham Road in Earley.  Let’s hope the work is not scheduled to take place at the same time as the Showcase roundabout works….

3  On 9th February, work will start on the next phase of the Wokingham station link road.  It will last 12 weeks.  During that time, Wellington Road will be closed at the end by the level crossing, and Station Road will also be closed.  There will be no left turn into Oxford Road from Barkham Road.  The link road itself will be open.  Major diversions will be in place.  You can find out more on the Wokingham council website:

6 June 2015 I was driving from the showcase roundabout today at around 10 30 am and found a long line of traffic on the Reading road heading to winnersh this was because the right hand turn to wicks has been removed. I feel this will cause problems and jams at peak times, also as I sat in the traffic 3 cyclist rode on the pavement heading to the showcase. Thank you wokingham council for wasting our money on this but still leaving lots of pot holes around winnersh.

Your borough councillors and the parish council were not happy about the arrows being removed not just at this location but all the way down the road except for around Arbor Lane. THe council removed them because they said there was not enough width in the road to have the central hatching and the cycleway markings. We were not consulted and all our protests were ignored. I would like to encourage cyclists but I foresee far more congestion as a result of the cycleway being put in.
