Those bins again

by Prue Bray on 15 March, 2012

Three questions I would like answers to.

1  How come the green waste wheelie bins cost £60 EVERY YEAR, when the council only has to supply them once?

2 How is the recycling incentive scheme being financed?

3 Does anyone else think the blue bags are, well….   a bit smaller than a normal black sack?

  1. In terms of the last question, you might want to see my latest blog on the bin bags: http://s.coop/aorg

    As a short answer: yes.

  2. Rachel Mills says:

    (1) I suppose we are paying for the picking up of the green waste, rather than the bin itself (?)
    (2) Don’t know – what I am puzzled about is how are they going to know whether you recycle or not. You could say you do recycle when you don’t …
    (3) Yes – smaller.

Regarding the green waste – you could see the charge for this as an incentive for people to compost their own green waste.

It seems a shame that we will still be limited to putting plastic bottles in the recycling. This is a big drawback. Many people still put the ‘wrong’ plastic in the bins.

I have serious doubts about the new system but am willing to see whether it works or not.

1 £60 per year is a lot compared to what others charge.
2 You and I are puzzled about the same thing!
3 Much smaller – if you look at the site you will see the photo of it compared to a 60 litre bag – smaller than that.

I agree with you about the range of recycling. What about food waste? Also textiles. Both are done in West Berkshire. There are places you can take tetrapaks, but the council doesn’t advertise them well.
