Gas main works on Mole Road – traffic disaster area

by Prue Bray on 12 April, 2010

gas-mains.jpgThe temporary traffic lights for the replacement gas mains on Mole Road in Sindlesham are causing mayhem.  Not because they are wrongly phased, but because of Bearwood Road.

The one-way part of Mole Road for the gas mains work comes almost to the junction with Bearwood Road.   So when the light goes green, cars come from Arborfield through the one-way bit and then have to stop because traffic turning right at the mini-roundabout from Bearwood Road has priority.  Which means when the light goes green for traffic coming from the crossroads, no-one can move because cars coming from Arborfield haven’t cleared the one-way section.

This is bad enough in the school holidays (traffic tailing back across the crossroads at peak times) but is going to be worse when the schools go back next week.  And I am very worried indeed about polling day on 6th May, because the polling station for half of Winnersh is at the parish council offices in Mole Road, and no-one is going to be able to get there.

Lights at the bottom of Bearwood Road are not going to help because nothing will be able to move on Bearwood Road either at school times.  So I have suggested to the council that while the temporary traffic lights are in place traffic from Barkham is prevented from going down the last part of Bearwood Road and sent down New Road instead.  People coming from Barkham will have to drive a couple of hundred yards further, but  everyone should be able to keep moving more easily – as long as nobody blocks the the mini-roundabouts.

SOMETHING has to be done to alter the current system for getting past the roadworks, because it is not working properly.

  1. Geoffrey Crabb says:

Why does the Council allow the roadworks contractor in Mole Road to ignore the tidal flow element of the traffic? This results in a huge tailback towards Winnersh crossroads in the evening, with hardly any queue in the opposite direction.

A one way system around the playing field via New Road would remove the need for lights altogether.
