If you’ve been out and about in Wokingham Borough recently you have probably seen those pairs of black wires lying across the road, tethered to a lamp post. They were there for a while, starting almost as soon as the school term finished.
Several people have asked me why the council was counting cars in the school holidays. Actually they weren’t counting cars, they were recording speeds around speed cameras. Together with accident statistics the information that’s recorded is used to create a history of conditions around the speed cameras, and helps the council analyse whether the right road safety measures are in place.
This exercise is carried out every 3 years. And the fact that it is done in the school holidays is fine – because with less traffic the council can get a reasonably accurate picture of how fast people would travel if the roads were clear.
So if you have ever wondered what those black wires were for, now you know.
