Turning in and out of Sainsburys

by Prue Bray on 2 November, 2010

There are two entrances and exits to Sainsburys at the Winnersh crossroads.   The main one is on Reading Road and is controlled by traffic lights.   The other one is in King Street Lane AND IT IS ONLY FOR PEOPLE COMING FROM OR GOING TO ARBORFIELD.

Sorry to shout.  BUT…

The entrance in King Street Lane exists purely and simply to remove the need for people coming from or going towards Arborfield to go through the crossroads.  So you can come from Arborfield and turn right into Sainsburys.   And you can go back towards Arborfield by turning left out of the junction.  But if you come from the direction of Reading, Hurst or Wokingham, you should be using the other entrance and exit.

Why?  Because it is dangerous to have vehicles slowing down to turn left into the entrance as they come across the crossroads.  And even more dangerous to have vehicles turning right across the traffic into the queue for the lights.

Last Thursday I went and counted cars going in and out of the King Street Lane entrance to the store.  And I found that about 5% of people turned in the wrong way.  But about 15% of people turned right instead of left – including some who had some very near misses.

The signs aren’t as clear as they might be, but if you look you will see, for example, a NO RIGHT TURN sign as you exit Sainsburys into King Street Lane.   I am trying to get improved signs.  In the meantime, can I implore you to use the other entrance and exit if you want to go in the other directions?  I really don’t want to see a nasty accident.
