Liberal Democrat Councillor for Winnersh ward Learn more

Repair work is being done on the bridge over the A329 (M) in Robin Hood Lane, Winnersh, mainly in the school holidays, but starting next week. I have put the text of the notice being sent out by the council below. It sounds a bit like a policeman reading out his notes in a courtroom (“The suspect proceeded in a south-westerly direction….”), but that’s because it needs to be technically correct. What it means is that there will be major roadworks on the bridge in Robin Hood Lane, that the speed limit will be reduced from 40 mph to 30 mph to make it safer, that there will be traffic lights operating to control the traffic flows, and that some of the time the road will be closed altogether – so on those days if you want to go from Winnersh to Dinton Pastures you will have to go via Woodley and Sandford Lane or round the back through Wokingham and Hurst. I don’t know what the bus from Twyford will do on those days. I will try to find out.
UPDATE: The 128 bus will go straight from Twyford to Wokingham along the main road through Hurst past the pond on the days when the bridge is closed. So if you are a bus traveller, it may be worth checking before you start your journey……
This is to inform you that Wokingham Borough Council as Traffic Authority proposes to make an Order under Sections 14(1) and 14(4)(b) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 that will have the following effects:
1. To introduce a temporary speed limit of 30 mph along the section of B3030 Robinhood Lane/Davis Street from a point 46metres north east of the junction of Robinhood Lane with Robin Hood Way in a north easterly direction to a point 300 metres north east of the junction of Davis Street and Davis Way, a distance of approximately 870 metres. This limit will apply when the necessary signs are displayed.
2. To prohibit any vehicle from proceeding along B3030 Robinhood Lane and B3030 Davis Street, between their respective junctions with Bluebell Meadow and Davis Way only when the necessary signs are displayed.
The reason for the prohibitions above is to enable contractors to undertake major bridge repairs in safety.
The restrictions to vehicular and pedestrian traffic will only be effective whilst the necessary signs are displayed. Access for residents within the closed sections will be maintained whilst the works proceed. However, during the road closures access for residents north or south of the bridge will only be via the Hurst or Winnersh directions respectively.
The Order will come into operation on 20th June 2010 and will continue in force for a period not exceeding 18 months or until the works have been completed whichever is the earlier.
It is anticipated, however, that:-
a) Works requiring the temporary speed limit of item 1 will commence on 20th June 2010 and be completed by 10th September 2010.
b) Works requiring the full road closure of item 2 will be carried out during certain days only from 20:00hrs on Sunday to 06:00hrs on Thursday each week commencing 20th July 2010 and be completed by 9th September 2010.
c) During the above periods when the road is not closed, temporary traffic signals will be operating for traffic crossing the bridge.

Dear Ms Bray,
I trust that the refurbishment works to the bridge over the A329(M) will include improvements to the pedestrian walkways on both sides and the approach pavements on the west side. Inclusion of a cycle track would be a sensible thing to do.
Regards
David Whitaker
Sorry not to have replied earlier – I was away on holiday and then ill. There are going to be changes to the barriers and the pavements, but I am not sure how extensive they are going to be. A cycle track would be sensible, but seems unlikely to happen as the council is strapped for cash.
