After the snow…. the floods

by Prue Bray on 20 January, 2010

Melting snow and rain = floods in Winnersh, just as they did last February.

Guess what?  The park and ride was flooded.  Suprise, surprise.

I understand that despite the developers’ best efforts with their Flood Risk Assessment and altered flood risk methodology the Environment Agency has not yet withdrawn its objection to the plans by Bovis to build several hundred houses at Hatch Farm Dairies, between King Street Lane and Lower Earley Way, with a relief road straight across the flood plain – right where it flooded on Sunday.  Again.

I have made a Freedom of Information request to the Environment Agency to get full details of the past flooding in that area.  I can remember a number of instances since I have been a councillor.  Something tells me the frequency of flooding is getting worse.  Let’s see if the data confirms that – in which case allowing further development there is madness.

Unable to get a photo this time, but here’s one of me and my fellow Lib Dem Winnersh councillor Malcolm Armstrong on March 6th 2007 on the bridge over the Loddon in Lower Earley Way – the same place that had problems over the weekend.  And oh look, there’s flooding!

flood-plain.jpg  All that water glistening in the background really shouldn’t be there – then or last Sunday and Monday.
