New cycleway on Reading Road ***UPDATED***

by Prue Bray on 3 November, 2014

A heads up for everyone in Winnersh that after Christmas work is going to start on putting a proper cycleway on the Reading Road between Showcase Cinema and the crossroads.

Mostly this is good news, but it won’t be entirely perfect, due to constraints in the road width, which mean that compromises have to be made.

The area around Baslow Road/Arbor Lane will have to stay as it is without a cycle lane, in order to be able to keep the right turn lanes in the middle of the road.  Cavendish Gardens and Albany Park Drive will not have right turn lanes any more.   I would prefer it if they did, but am being told it isn’t possible.

Three traffic islands will go in order to create width in the road.  Currently these are used by pedestrians to cross the road, as there is only one crossing between the crossroads and the roundabout.  On the plus side, there will be 2 extra toucan crossings, one between Arbor Lane and Albany Park Drive and one near Gazelle Close (Wickes and Halfords).  The new crossings are not in the ideal place but it seems that driveways and services under the road make it too difficult to put the crossings anywhere else.   Two new crossings is better than no crossings, even if they are slightly in the wrong place.

If you live along Reading Road, the council should be sending you some information about what is happening before the end of the month.

GOOD NEWS: Following our protests at the location of one of the toucan crossings – protests which were backed up by the Parish Council at their meeting last Tuesday – one of the toucan crossings has been moved to nearer to Cavendish Gardens.  Still not absolutely perfect – but a lot better than the previous site.
