Grass-cutting – any questions?

by Prue Bray on 15 July, 2014

How often – and how well -Wokingham Borough Council cuts the grass on the verges and in the parks is a hot topic at the moment.  As it was last year.  For the same reasons.  Which are generally around people thinking grass is too long, and wondering whether the cutting is actually being done when it is supposed to be.

I had been saying for a while that it would be a big step forward if we could find out when the grass was SUPPOSED to be cut.  We haven’t got qite that far yet, but a list of when the grass was last cut is now available on the council website here and from that you can estimate when it is due to be cut again, which will be approximately 6 weeks later.

There is also a petition running demanding that the council cuts the grass more often.  You can find out about it on the getwokingham website

The petition itself is on the council website under “improving Wokingham’s green spaces”

Personally I am not sure whether cutting the grass more often is the answer, or whether what’s needed is a different distribution of the existing mowing to do more in the Spring and early Summer.   Or maybe the answer is to leave some areas to be cut less often.  One thing is certain, the council doesn’t have a great deal of money to spare, so they are unlikely to favour a solution that costs more.

Because this is a hot topic, it has been added to the agenda for the Overview & Scrutiny Management Committee for 28th July.  This committee, as the name suggests, scrutinises council services, and among other things, tries to come up with ideas to improve them.   This is a public meeting, so if you are interested in grass-cutting, come along to the Council Offices at 7.30 pm on 28th and listen to what’s said.  If you want to ask a question yourself, you can, but you have to submit it in writing.  You can wait for the agenda to be published – it will be on the council website on the 21st or 22nd, look for it at http://www.wokingham.gov.uk/council/meetings/minutes/ – and once you have read what’s in the report, you can submit your question to democratic.services@wokingham.gov.uk, by  10 am on Friday 25th July.  You only get to submit one question, but if you come to the meeting, you can ask a follow-up question on the night.

If you don’t want to ask a question yourself, but have something you would like answered, you can get in touch with me, and I will try and get it answered for you.  Add a comment below this post and I’ll pick it up.
