General Election 2010 in Wokingham
Up to now I have been mainly blogging on what I’m up to in my council ward in Winnersh, which happens to be slap bang in the middle of Wokingham constituency. From now until May 7th I’m going to be blogging about the General Election, in which I’m standing as the Lib Dem candidate.
And what do I think of it so far? No, not rubbish, but a lot of hot air and a lot of ducking and diving. From commentators as well as politicians.
From all the door-knocking I have done it is clear people in Wokingham are ready for a change of government – but equally clear they are not sure that the Conservatives are going to deliver the sort of change they want.
As for what they think of the Lib Dems, well, Vince Cable is enormously popular with the public, even with the hardest of Conservative voters. And at last – at last – the public appear to have woken up to the advantages of proportional voting systems, which we Lib Dems have been going on about for as long as I can remember. The other really popular Lib Dem policy is giving people the right to sack their MP. People are rightly furious about what the MPs have been up to with their expenses – but there has been no way to get rid of any of them.
The Lib Dems have been polling at around 20% over the past week. None of the main parties has really moved in the polls. This week we have the first of the Leaders’ Debates and tonight Nick Clegg is being interviewed by Jeremy Paxman. Maybe that will have an impact on the figures?
While all that high level stuff is going on, I’m rushing about Wokingham constituency with my team – who have been brilliant. My husband and my children have been coping with the washing and the cooking. And my son has taken up Octopush. No, you’ll have to google it!
